I came across these two Nene feeding up in Volcano National Park. I sat down on the ground and watched, taking pictures of them as they stayed close together. They belonged to each other, and they belonged on this 'aina. I feel deeply connected to this 'aina as well, and have a deep love for the lava fields all around me. As I watched these Nene together, I thought about how we all need to feel connected, to belong, and it was such a poignant picture of how one person, sticking by your side, can make you feel that you belong. I just knew that one day that moment would be turned into a painting.
