The first time we went to Akaka Falls, like everyone else who visits, we saw the falls off in the distance, and turned left down the path heading directly to the falls. It's a fun walk going through towering bananas, heliconias, ferns and gingers. You quickly arrive at the waterfall. It's astounding!!! It's gorgeous... rain or sun!!
But since that first visit, we have discovered that taking the "path less traveled" , that is, turning to the right is the much better experience. We recommend this to all of our visitors!
While the tourists trying to quickly take in each sight hurry towards the waterfall, the path to the right is the dreamy bamboo rain forest walk you've always dreamed of!
Whether it's raining and you need an umbrella, or the sun is shining, you will see gorgeous hillside views.
And if you take your time (it's the Hawaii way) and just smell the air, listen to the sounds, and look all around you, I promise you will be amazed at the surprises you find! Don't forget your camera!
This painting, I've titled "Hidden Treasure" was painted representing one of the many little hidden waterfalls along the trail.
Going right, instead of left, is a little longer walk than heading directly to Akaka falls, but there are so many treasures along the way. And completing your walk, you are rewarded with the stately falls towering above you, mist rising and dropping deeper than you can even see! It's well worth a visit!
